“Use AI, Don’t Surrender to It: CJI Surya Kant Urges Judicial Caution”

Surya Kant has called for a balanced and thoughtful approach to the use of artificial intelligence in the judiciary, urging judges not to fear emerging technologies but also not to place blind trust in them. Speaking on the growing role of AI in legal systems, he emphasised that such tools should serve only as aids to human decision-making—not as substitutes for judicial reasoning. He cautioned that over-reliance on AI could lead to serious risks, including inaccuracies, embedded biases, and potential misuse. While AI can significantly enhance efficiency, legal research, and case management, it lacks the human capacity for ethical judgment, empathy, and constitutional interpretation—qualities that are central to delivering justice.
