Apollo Hospitals Hyderabad Performs Rare 10-Hour Lung Lavage Procedure Successfully

In a remarkable medical achievement, specialists at Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills, performed a highly complex Whole Lung Lavage (WLL) procedure on a 38-year-old patient diagnosed with Pulmonary Alveolar Proteinosis—a condition that leads to the accumulation of fat and protein in the lungs, severely affecting breathing. The procedure, which lasted nearly 10 hours, involved washing both lungs with around 30 litres of warm saline solution to remove the obstructive material and restore proper oxygen exchange. Known as one of the most technically demanding procedures in pulmonary medicine, WLL requires advanced anaesthesia, precise airway control, and seamless coordination among medical teams. Led by Dr Vijay Kumar Chennamchetty, the team reported significant improvement in the patient’s condition post-surgery. The multidisciplinary effort included experts from anaesthesiology and pulmonology, highlighting the hospital’s advanced capabilities in handling rare and critical conditions. This successful procedure marks a significant milestone in advanced respiratory care and showcases Hyderabad’s growing prominence in specialised healthcare.
