Dhaka: Bangladesh on Tuesday summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma to its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, raising concerns over the security of Bangladeshi diplomatic missions in India, including those in New Delhi and Kolkata.
According to reports, Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam called in the Indian envoy amid what officials described as an emerging security situation affecting Bangladeshi missions across various Indian cities. Diplomatic sources said Verma was requested to ensure strengthened protection for Bangladesh’s diplomatic establishments in India.
This is the second time in the past 10 days that Pranay Verma has been summoned by Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry. During the tenure of Bangladesh’s interim government, the Indian High Commissioner has reportedly been summoned at least six times over different incidents.
Earlier, on December 14, Verma was called to the ministry in connection with an attack on Inquilab Moncho convener Sharif Osman Hadi. At that time, Bangladesh sought India’s cooperation to prevent the alleged attackers from fleeing across the border.
The latest development comes amid heightened diplomatic sensitivities and growing concerns over the safety of foreign missions, underscoring the need for enhanced security and coordination between the two neighbouring countries.
