Boat Carrying 250, Including Rohingya Refugees, Sinks in Andaman Sea

Dhaka: In a tragic incident, a boat carrying around 250 people, including Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi nationals, capsized in the Andaman Sea while en route to Malaysia, leaving all passengers missing. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Organization for Migration, the vessel had departed from Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar district of Bangladesh. Preliminary reports suggest that overcrowding, coupled with strong winds and rough sea conditions, caused the boat to lose control and sink. The status of rescue operations remains unclear. UN agencies highlighted that the tragedy reflects the ongoing crisis faced by Rohingya refugees, many of whom continue to undertake dangerous sea journeys in search of better opportunities. Ongoing violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine state and limited access to education, employment, and humanitarian aid in refugee camps have forced many to take such risks, often lured by false promises of jobs abroad. The UN has urged the global community to increase support and funding to ensure life-saving assistance for refugees. Currently, Bangladesh hosts over one million Rohingya refugees who fled persecution in Myanmar. The incident once again underscores the urgent need for long-term solutions to the Rohingya crisis and safer migration pathways.
