Andhra CM Defends PPP Model for 10 New Medical Colleges, Criticizes YSRCP Governance
Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday defended the development of 10 medical colleges under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, saying the approach would ensure better services while maintaining government oversight.
Speaking at the fifth collectors’ conference at the state secretariat, Naidu addressed concerns about the politically sensitive initiative, which had faced opposition from the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP. He emphasized that while the colleges are being developed under PPP, they will function as government institutions.
“Services will be better through the PPP mode. Some people say that medical colleges are being privatized. Though they are built through PPP mode, they will operate as government colleges,” the CM said. He added that 70% of services will be extended under the NTR Vaidya Seva scheme, and the number of medical seats will also increase.
Naidu highlighted that similar PPP projects are being implemented by the Centre and said he was unafraid of criticism, stressing the need for transparency.
The CM also criticized the previous YSRCP government for financial mismanagement. “Rs 500 crore was spent on the Rushikonda Palace in Vizag, which could have funded two medical colleges. The past government was not even in a position to pay salaries and availed loans at the highest interest rates, creating problems with 13–14% debt,” he said.
In addition, Naidu issued a warning to bureaucrats, particularly in the Revenue Department, against inefficiency and exploiting loopholes in the system. “Identifying loopholes and making use of them has led to a situation where work is being forsaken. This scourge is highest in the Revenue Department,” he said.
The CM’s remarks underline his commitment to expanding medical education in the state while ensuring governance reforms and efficient administration.
