The Congress government in Telangana is preparing to replace elected governing bodies of Primary Agricultural Cooperative Credit Societies (PACS) and District Cooperative Central Banks (DCCBs) with nominated committees, a move that has sparked sharp criticism from farmer groups and opposition parties. Critics allege the decision is aimed at avoiding elections amid growing farmer dissatisfaction and consolidating political control over cooperative institutions. The terms of 980 PACS and nine DCCBs expired earlier this year, and despite extensions, the government dissolved the bodies on December 19 and appointed special officers. Orders paving the way for nominated committees are expected soon.
