Ecuadorian Footballer Mario Pineida Shot Dead in Apparent Attack, Police Say

Ecuadorian footballer Mario Pineida, a defender for Barcelona de Guayaquil, was shot dead in an apparent attack in Guayaquil, police said on Wednesday, as violence continues to rise in Ecuador. Another person was killed and one more injured in the incident. The Interior Ministry confirmed Pineida’s death, while his club expressed deep sorrow over the loss. The 33-year-old had earlier played for Independiente del Valle and Brazil’s Fluminense. Ecuador is witnessing a surge in violence, with the country heading towards its deadliest year on record in terms of homicides.
