Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced that social media platform X will make its recommendation algorithm public within seven days. The release will include the full code used for both organic content and advertising post recommendations. Musk said the move aims to improve transparency and help users understand how content is suggested on the platform.
According to Musk, X will continue updating the open-source algorithm every four weeks, accompanied by detailed developer notes explaining changes. The decision comes amid ongoing regulatory scrutiny, particularly in Europe, where authorities are examining how algorithms influence the spread of illegal or harmful content.
The announcement also follows user complaints about reduced visibility of posts from followed accounts and Musk’s earlier admission of a significant bug in the “For You” algorithm. Meanwhile, Musk’s AI company xAI revealed it has secured $20 billion in funding from major global investors, underscoring its push to integrate advanced artificial intelligence into X’s recommendation systems.
