Ex-South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol Sentenced to Life Imprisonment Over Martial Law Bid

Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Seoul Central District Court for his failed attempt to impose martial law in 2024. The court convicted him of leading an insurrection, stating that the deployment of troops to the National Assembly compound was a serious threat to the country’s democratic system.

Although special prosecutors had sought the death penalty, the court handed down a life sentence in what is considered one of the most significant political rulings in South Korea’s recent history. The hearing was attended by the jailed former president and broadcast live nationwide.
