Indian-origin politician Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as the 112th Mayor of New York City on New Year’s Day, marking a historic milestone as the city’s first South Asian and Muslim mayor. At a ceremonial inauguration held outside City Hall, Mamdani took the oath of office administered by Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.
Vowing to govern “expansively and audaciously,” Mamdani pledged to deliver a bold, inclusive agenda focused on affordability and equity for New Yorkers. In an emotional moment, he thanked his family spanning “from Kampala to Delhi,” acknowledging their support in his journey to one of the most powerful mayoral offices in the world.
