Goechala Trek Claims Third Life in 2025; Calls Grow for Better Medical Support

A 45-year-old trekker from Uttar Pradesh, Suraj Kumar Tiwari, died on the popular Goechala trekking route in Sikkim after falling ill during the descent near Kokchurong camp. Despite first aid and efforts by fellow trekkers and locals, he passed away near Phedang campsite at an altitude of 12,100 ft.

Tiwari, who was on an eight-day expedition in Khangchendzonga National Park, is survived by his wife and two children. His body was later taken to Gyalshing District Hospital for post-mortem before being handed over to his family.

This marks the third death on the Goechala route in 2025, following incidents involving a Kolkata trekker and a local from Gyalshing, raising safety concerns. Tourism stakeholders are urging authorities to strengthen medical facilities and emergency rescue systems, particularly along the Dzongri-Goechala corridor.
