A recent cyber fraud involving fake banking apps in Hyderabad has exposed deeper flaws in digital security systems, challenging the long-held belief that such crimes occur due to “careless users.” Victims lost over ₹11 lakh after receiving convincing WhatsApp messages posing as bank alerts, prompting them to install fraudulent apps. The incident highlights a systemic failure in digital design that assumes perfect human behaviour under pressure. Modern cybercrime thrives not on hacking technology, but on exploiting routine human responses in high-stress, information-heavy environments. The real issue lies in systems that fail to detect abnormal behaviour even after credentials are compromised, placing unrealistic responsibility on individuals instead of building resilient, human-aware security frameworks.
