Hyderabad Doctors Pull Off Rare Windpipe Reconstruction to Save Young Patient

Hyderabad Doctors Perform Complex Windpipe Reconstruction, Save Young Man’s Life

Doctors at KIMS Hospital, Gachibowli, have successfully saved the life of a young man from Hyderabad by performing a complex windpipe reconstruction surgery after his airway became critically narrowed due to chemical damage.

According to hospital officials, the patient had accidentally consumed phenyl nearly two years ago. The corrosive substance caused severe injury to his windpipe, and subsequent medical interventions led to progressive scarring and narrowing of the airway, resulting in extreme respiratory distress.

Explaining the severity of the condition, Dr Rohan Reddy C, senior onco-thoracic surgeon at KIMS Hospital, said the patient’s windpipe had shrunk from a normal diameter of about 2 cm to just 8 mm. “A 3.5 cm segment of the trachea was severely constricted, making even routine breathing difficult. Any accumulation of phlegm triggered life-threatening episodes of gasping,” he said.

A multidisciplinary surgical team comprising Dr Vijay and Dr Rama Phanindra undertook the high-risk procedure. The surgeons carefully removed the damaged portion of the windpipe and reconstructed the airway using healthy tissue, employing advanced surgical techniques to restore normal airflow.

Following the successful operation, the patient has been discharged from the hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. Doctors said he is now breathing normally and recovering well, marking the surgery as a significant life-saving intervention.
