Chennai: IIT-Madras Director Prof V Kamakoti has said that students proficient in traditional music can now pursue engineering courses at the premier institute, highlighting the strong mathematical and scientific foundations of music.
Speaking at the 93rd annual South Indian Music Conference and Festival of the Indian Fine Arts Society on December 17, Prof Kamakoti urged parents to encourage children to learn music from an early age. He said IIT-Madras is actively promoting interdisciplinary education by integrating arts, science and engineering.
The Director announced that the institute is establishing a bamboo-based mic-less auditorium and is also in the process of setting up the Ilaiyaraja Centre for Excellence in Music. Citing ‘Operation Sindhoor’ as an example, he said multiple engineering disciplines worked together, underscoring the importance of cross-disciplinary learning.
