The Indian government is negotiating with around 7–8 countries, including those in East Asia, to broaden the acceptance of Unified Payments Interface (UPI), Financial Services Secretary M. Nagaraju confirmed.
UPI is already operational in eight countries — Bhutan, Singapore, Qatar, Mauritius, Nepal, UAE, Sri Lanka, and France. India is integrating UPI into trade negotiations to enhance fintech participation while leveraging its cost and scale advantages. Expanded international acceptance will allow Indian tourists and businesses to conduct digital transactions abroad seamlessly.
