India Set to Launch First AI-Powered Orbital Data Centre Satellite

India is taking a major leap in space technology with plans to launch its first AI-powered orbital data centre satellite under a partnership between Pixxel and Sarvam AI. The upcoming “Pathfinder” satellite will be designed, built, and operated by Pixxel, while Sarvam will power it with advanced AI capabilities. This innovative satellite will enable real-time data processing and AI inference directly in space — a significant shift from traditional systems that rely heavily on Earth-based data centres. Equipped with high-performance GPUs and Pixxel’s hyperspectral imaging technology, the satellite will capture and analyse high-resolution data in orbit. This reduces the need to transmit massive datasets back to Earth, enabling faster insights and smarter decision-making. The mission is expected to launch by late 2026 and will open new possibilities in environmental monitoring, infrastructure tracking, and resource management. Leaders from both companies emphasized that this project marks a big step toward technological independence, allowing India to build and operate its own AI systems in space without relying on foreign infrastructure. This initiative positions India at the forefront of next-generation space computing and AI innovation.
