IPS Officer Arrested in Raghurama Krishna Raju Custodial Torture Case in Andhra Pradesh

Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh Police arrested Bihar cadre IPS officer Sunil Nayak in Bihar on Monday in connection with the alleged 2021 custodial torture of Andhra Pradesh Assembly Deputy Speaker K. Raghurama Krishna Raju.

Nayak, who was serving as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in the Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Andhra Pradesh at the time of the incident, was taken into custody by a special police team and is being brought to Guntur on a transit warrant. Officials confirmed that a case had been registered against him and several others.

The case relates to allegations made by Raghurama Krishna Raju, who was arrested in May 2021 during the YSRCP government led by former Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. Raju claimed he was physically assaulted and tortured while in police custody after being detained for allegedly making derogatory remarks against the government.

Following the change of government in Andhra Pradesh in 2024, police registered an FIR against multiple officials, including Jagan Mohan Reddy, former CID chief PV Sunil Kumar, former Intelligence chief Seetharamanjaneyulu, Sunil Nayak, and other officers, based on Raju’s complaint that there was an attempt on his life during custody.

According to the complaint, despite recovering from recent cardiac surgery, Raju alleged he was denied proper medical examination, forcibly transported to Guntur, and beaten with a rubber belt and lathi while being denied medication. He also claimed that officers applied pressure on his chest, endangering his life.

Police had earlier summoned Sunil Nayak for questioning, but he did not appear, leading to his arrest. Further investigation in the case is ongoing.
