The Union Cabinet of India has approved the proposal of the Government of Kerala to officially rename the State as “Keralam,” reflecting its deep linguistic and historical identity. The name “Keralam” has long been used in the local Malayalam language and is rooted in ancient Dravidian traditions and historical records dating back centuries.
The decision marks the culmination of a sustained effort by the state to align its official name with its cultural heritage and local usage. The move is also seen as fulfilling a long-standing constitutional aspiration to recognize the region’s authentic identity within India. Experts believe the change reinforces the importance of language, heritage, and regional pride in India’s federal structure.
