Veteran Australian opener Usman Khawaja has announced his retirement from international cricket after the fifth Ashes Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground, bringing an end to a distinguished career spanning 88 Tests. The Pakistan-born batter, Australia’s first Muslim Test cricketer, used the moment to openly criticise the racial stereotyping and scrutiny he faced throughout his career.
Speaking at a media conference in Sydney, the 39-year-old said he was treated “a little bit different” because of his Pakistani and Muslim background, particularly during injury setbacks this season. Khawaja highlighted how racial stereotypes questioning his work ethic and commitment resurfaced during criticism over his absence from training due to back spasms.
Khawaja will play his final Test at the SCG, the venue where he began his first-class career and scripted memorable Ashes performances, including a career-reviving double century haul in 2022. He retires with 6,206 Test runs at an average of 43.49, including 16 centuries. Despite the challenges, Khawaja said he leaves the game with “contentment” and hopes he has inspired others along the way.
