LGBT: A LEGAL BATTLE RECEIVES OVERWHELMING SUPPORT FROM COMMUNITY, EDUCATORS, LAW ENFORCEMENT AND CIVIL SOCIETY

Director P. Suneel Kumar Reddy’s socially relevant courtroom drama LGBT: A Legal Battle, which was released on June 19, is steadily gaining appreciation from audiences across India and overseas. Released in multiplexes across major cities in the Telugu states and other parts of the country, as well as in the United States, the film has received a warm response from both the LGBTQIA+ community and mainstream audiences. The film follows the legal battle of a transgender victim seeking justice after a heinous crime. Through an engaging courtroom narrative, it explores issues of prejudice, family acceptance, dignity, equal opportunity and access to justice. While centered on the journey of its protagonist Mohini, the film reflects the experiences and aspirations of the transgender community as a whole. What makes the response particularly encouraging is the wide spectrum of support the film has received from educators, legal professionals, police officials, social organizations, students and members of civil society. A notable moment came when Hyderabad City Commissioner of Police V.C. Sajjanar watched the film and appreciated its efforts to create awareness about the challenges faced by transgender persons and the importance of fostering a more inclusive society. Earlier, senior police officials including the Commissioner of Police, Visakhapatnam, had also extended their encouragement and support to the film’s outreach efforts. The legal fraternity has also responded positively to the film. Several advocates and legal professionals have appreciated its portrayal of the justice delivery system and its emphasis on ensuring equal access to justice for marginalized communities. Educational institutions have emerged as some of the strongest supporters of the film. Organizations such as Manasa Defence Academy, Visakhapatnam, Vistha International School, Andhra Mahila Sabha Colleges, Keys College, and CBIT, Proddatur actively encouraged students and faculty members to engage with the film and its message of empathy, equality and social inclusion. Social organizations have also played a significant role in expanding the film’s reach. Radhika Charitable Trust encouraged underprivileged sections of society to watch the film, recognizing cinema as a powerful medium for sensitization and awareness. In another significant initiative, Rotary Club Mega City came forward to organize special screenings for students, helping introduce younger audiences to conversations around diversity, inclusion and human dignity. Adding further momentum to the awareness campaign, Rotarian Lakshmi Bhaskar has initiated a special screening drive for nearly 400 employees and factory workers, ensuring that the film’s message reaches audiences beyond traditional cinema-goers and into workplaces and communities. The film’s promotional and community outreach campaign has been actively supported by Mukunda Mala of Queer Bandhu, who has been instrumental in mobilizing community support and facilitating awareness initiatives around the film. One of the unique strengths of LGBT: A Legal Battle is its inclusive casting. Alongside accomplished actors such as LB Sriram, Ester Noronha, Raju Kher, Ananda Chakrapani and Preethi Nigam, the film features several transgender and gay artists and activists in important roles, including Chandramukhi, Laila and Vishnu Teja. Their participation brings authenticity and lived experience to the narrative, making the film both emotionally engaging and socially relevant. Over the years, Indian cinema has increasingly explored stories from marginalized communities. However, LGBT: A Legal Battle stands apart by combining a compelling legal drama with a deeply human story about identity, acceptance and justice. Rather than presenting the transgender community as subjects of sympathy, the film portrays them as individuals seeking dignity, equal opportunity and recognition as fellow human beings. Speaking about the response to the film, director P. Suneel Kumar Reddy expressed gratitude to the community, educational institutions, police officials, legal professionals, social organizations and audiences who have supported the initiative. “LGBT: A Legal Battle was conceived not merely as a film but as a platform for dialogue. The response from both the LGBTQIA+ community and mainstream audiences has been heartening. We are grateful to every individual and institution that has helped take this conversation forward. Cinema has the power to build empathy, and it is encouraging to see so many sections of society come together in support of inclusion and equality,” he said. Perhaps the most inspiring aspect of the film’s journey has been the manner in which civil society has embraced its message. From police officials and educators to charitable organizations, Rotarians, students, activists and ordinary citizens, diverse groups have come forward to support awareness efforts and encourage meaningful conversations around acceptance and equal rights. As the film continues its theatrical run in India and overseas, LGBT: A Legal Battle is emerging not only as a courtroom drama but also as a catalyst for dialogue—demonstrating how cinema can contribute to building a more compassionate, inclusive and equitable society. For Rights. Justice. Equality.
