Goa Nightclub Fire Case: Luthra Brothers Deported from Thailand, Taken into Custody in Delhi
New Delhi: Gaurav Luthra and Saurabh Luthra, brothers and co-owners of the Goa nightclub where a devastating fire claimed 25 lives, were deported from Thailand and taken into custody upon their arrival in Delhi on Tuesday.
The duo was immediately handed over to Indian authorities at the airport and is expected to be produced before a Delhi court for further legal proceedings, sources said.
The December 6 fire at the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Arpora, North Goa, triggered nationwide outrage and raised serious concerns over alleged fire safety violations and lapses by the management. Following the incident, a case of culpable homicide and negligence was registered against the brothers — Gaurav Luthra (44) and Saurabh Luthra (40).
Investigators allege that the nightclub was operating in violation of mandatory fire and safety norms, which contributed to the scale of the tragedy. The brothers were detained in Phuket on December 11 after Indian authorities alerted Thai officials.
The Indian government cancelled their passports and submitted a detailed dossier to Thai authorities seeking their deportation. An Interpol Blue Corner Notice was also issued after the brothers allegedly left the country shortly after the incident.
So far, Goa Police has arrested five managers and staff members of the nightclub in connection with the case, with officials indicating that further arrests may follow as the investigation progresses.
Meanwhile, the Bombay High Court on Monday converted a civil suit related to the nightclub fire into a public interest litigation, observing that “someone has to be held accountable” for the tragedy. India and Thailand share an Extradition Treaty signed in 2013, which came into force in June 2015.
