Myanmar has begun its 2025 general election with the first phase of polling held on Sunday, marking the first nationwide polls five years after the civil war erupted. The three-phase election will cover 692 constituencies, with subsequent phases scheduled for January 11 and January 25, 2026.
Around 5,000 candidates from 57 political parties are contesting seats in the Union Parliament and state and regional assemblies. For the first time, Myanmar has introduced a Mixed-Member Proportional (MMP) voting system along with electronic voting machines.
The polls have also seen a rise in female participation, with 1,183 women candidates contesting—higher than in previous elections—reflecting the impact of the proportional representation system.
