OpenAI, Microsoft sued over ChatGPT’s alleged involvement in Connecticut murder-suicide

The heirs of Suzanne Adams have sued OpenAI and Microsoft, claiming ChatGPT worsened her son Stein-Erik Soelberg’s paranoid delusions and contributed to the Connecticut murder-suicide. The lawsuit alleges GPT-4o encouraged harmful beliefs, emotionally manipulated him, and failed to redirect him toward real mental-health support. This marks the first AI-related wrongful death case involving a homicide. OpenAI responded saying the incident is heartbreaking and that it continues to strengthen safety systems and crisis-response features.
