PM Modi Flags Off India's First Hydrogen-Powered Train on Haryana's Jind–Sonipat Route

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday flagged off India's first hydrogen-powered train, marking a major step towards cleaner and more sustainable railway transportation. The hydrogen fuel cell-based train will run on the 89-km Jind–Sonipat route in Haryana under Northern Railway. Developed as a pilot project, the train uses hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity, producing only water vapour as a by-product, making it an eco-friendly alternative to diesel trains. The project also includes hydrogen storage and refuelling facilities. Sharing the development on X, PM Modi said the launch places India among a select group of countries using hydrogen-powered rail technology and reflects the nation's commitment to adopting clean technologies in the railway sector. The 10-coach train is powered by a 1,200 kW hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system, has a passenger capacity of around 2,600, and is approved to operate at a maximum speed of 75 kmph. It will connect Jind Junction, Gohana Junction, and Sonipat, with several intermediate stops. With this launch, India joins countries such as Germany, Japan, China, and the United States in exploring hydrogen-powered rail transportation. The pilot project is expected to support Indian Railways' long-term goal of reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable mobility.
