Pothole-related road accident deaths in India have increased by 53% between 2020 and 2024, claiming 9,438 lives nationwide, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari informed Parliament. Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of fatalities, accounting for more than half of the deaths.
The Centre stated that while it maintains National Highways, state governments are responsible for roads under their jurisdiction, stressing the need for proper maintenance and timely repairs to prevent accidents.
