In a major policy shift, the Telangana government has cancelled the previous “₹ 101 annual tax” scheme that exempted thousands of lower-income homeowners, and issued demands for substantially higher property tax payments. Under the previous scheme, qualifying residences were required to pay just ₹ 101 per year; now, many affected homeowners are facing demands of over ₹ 10,000 annually, with some being asked to pay several years’ worth of taxes in one lump sum.
The move is estimated to impact around 5 lakh homes and generate over ₹ 100 crore in additional revenue for the municipal authorities. Homeowners claim they were not notified properly and accuse the government of unfairly targeting poorer households. The government, however, argues that the earlier scheme was unsustainable and that the revisions are needed to align tax levels with current property values and municipal revenue needs.
