SC Grants Interim Protection to Shreyas Talpade, Alok Nath in Marketing Scam Case

The Supreme Court on Monday granted interim protection from arrest to actors Shreyas Talpade and Alok Nath in a cheating and criminal breach of trust case linked to the Human Welfare Credit Cooperative Society.

A bench of Justices B V Nagarathna and R Mahadevan ordered that the protection will continue until the investigation is completed. The court clarified that the probe may proceed in accordance with law.

During the hearing, Talpade’s counsel argued that the actor had only attended an annual event as a guest celebrity and did not earn any money from the society. Alok Nath’s lawyer submitted that the actor never attended any event and that his photograph had allegedly been used without consent for nearly a decade.

The court also observed that merely appearing in advertisements or as a brand ambassador does not automatically make an actor liable if a company later faces criminal cases. The bench disposed of Talpade’s plea by continuing the interim protection from arrest.

The case involves multiple FIRs registered across states following a complaint by a Sonipat resident, alleging that celebrities promoted the cooperative society and lured investors. Police said the role of the actors will be examined during the investigation.
