Sri Lankan Navy Arrests 22 Tamil Nadu Fishermen Near Katchatheevu, Boats Seized

The Sri Lankan Navy arrested 22 fishermen from Tamil Nadu and seized four mechanised boats near Katchatheevu for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) and fishing in Sri Lankan waters.

According to officials, the fishermen belonged to Rameswaram and Mandapam in Ramanathapuram district and had ventured into the sea on routine fishing operations on Wednesday night. The arrests took place in the early hours near the sensitive region of the Palk Strait, which has long witnessed tensions between the two countries over fishing rights.

The incident has once again raised concerns among fishing communities, with appeals being made for diplomatic intervention and the safe release of the fishermen.
