Tamil Nadu Launches Mega Drive to Educate 4 Lakh Adults, Aims for Full Literacy

Tamil Nadu is set to roll out a major literacy initiative to educate over four lakh adults as part of the New India Literacy Programme for 2026–27. The programme will focus on individuals aged 15 and above, aiming to improve basic reading, writing, numeracy, and essential life skills. Community centres, schools, and local institutions will be used as learning hubs. Over 17,000 volunteers, along with NGOs and student groups, will support the initiative, while surveys will identify non-literate individuals across the state. With strong community participation and structured implementation, the government aims to significantly reduce illiteracy and move closer to achieving full literacy.
