Telangana Announces Heatwave Plan: Water Bells in Schools, Cooling Centres Set Up

Amid rising temperatures, Telangana has rolled out a comprehensive heatwave action plan. Schools will implement mandatory ‘water bells’ to keep students hydrated, while malls, religious places, and public buildings are being converted into cooling centres. Authorities have issued an Orange Alert, with temperatures expected to reach up to 44°C. Extended Content: With heatwave conditions intensifying, the government of Telangana has introduced a wide-ranging action plan to protect public health. In Hyderabad and across the state, schools have been directed to introduce ‘water bells’—scheduled breaks ensuring students stay hydrated—and to avoid outdoor classes during peak heat hours. Anganwadi centres will now function only until 11 am to safeguard children from extreme temperatures. Additionally, malls, shops, religious places, and government buildings have been designated as cooling centres, offering free drinking water and resting spaces for the public. Under the guidance of Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha, district authorities have been instructed to take preventive measures. Special focus is being given to high-risk groups such as gig workers, including auto drivers, cab drivers, and delivery personnel. Hospitals are being equipped with dedicated heatstroke response teams, while the electricity department is preparing a summer action plan to ensure uninterrupted power supply to critical services. The fire department will also conduct safety audits to prevent heat-related incidents. The Telangana State Development Planning Society will provide localized heat forecasts, helping officials respond effectively. With temperatures likely to hover between 41°C and 44°C in the coming weeks, residents are advised to avoid outdoor activities during afternoon hours and make use of ‘Chalivendrams’ set up across the state.
