Telangana Cyber Police Register Cases Over Alleged Morphed Posts Targeting PM Modi During CJP Protests

Hyderabad: The Telangana Cyber Crime Police have registered two cases over the alleged circulation of morphed and objectionable social media content targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the recent Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protests. The cases were filed on July 29 following complaints by BJP supporters, who alleged that manipulated videos and images of the Prime Minister were being circulated on Facebook and Instagram. According to the complaints, several social media accounts allegedly shared digitally altered content portraying Prime Minister Modi in an objectionable manner. The complainants also sought action against Meta, alleging that its platforms hosted the content. The cybercrime police have named the operators of the identified social media accounts and the head of Meta India as accused under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act. BJP spokesperson N.V. Subhash said the party welcomed criticism and democratic debate but drew a distinction between political dissent and what he described as organised online abuse. He urged the police to identify those operating the accounts and initiate appropriate legal action. In a separate complaint, another BJP supporter alleged that certain Instagram handles had circulated morphed videos and images of Prime Minister Modi, US President Donald Trump and former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, claiming the content was obscene, misleading and capable of disturbing public order. Police sources said the cybercrime unit has begun tracing the operators of the social media accounts named in the complaints. Officials also stated that the links cited in the complaints had become inactive by July 30, while the investigation into the matter is continuing.
