Tesla has lost its position as the world’s top-selling electric vehicle maker, delivering 1.64 million vehicles in 2025—a 9% decline from the previous year. Chinese EV giant BYD, which sold 2.26 million vehicles, now holds the crown. Tesla’s sales slump has been attributed to rising competition, political controversies surrounding Elon Musk, and the expiration of the $7,500 US EV tax credit. Despite the setback, Tesla shares ended 2025 with an 11% gain amid investor optimism about Musk’s future ventures in robotaxis and humanoid robots.
