The 400-Gram Rule: How Much Fruit and Vegetables Indians Should Eat Daily

ICMR–NIN nutrition experts have released new guidelines recommending that every Indian consume at least 400 grams of vegetables and 100 grams of fresh fruits daily to reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, strokes, and heart disease. Pregnant women are advised to include an additional 100 grams of leafy greens for better nutrient intake.

The guidelines emphasize fresh, locally available, seasonal produce, and a variety of colours to ensure all essential vitamins and minerals. Calorie-dense tubers like potatoes, yams, and colocasia should be limited, with preference given to root vegetables like carrots, radish, and turnips. NIN experts suggest incorporating vegetables and fruits in salads, curries, dal, stir-fried dishes, and even rice for a balanced daily diet.
