Tom Cruise to play the world’s most powerful man in 2026 film ‘Digger’

Los Angeles: Hollywood star Tom Cruise will headline acclaimed filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu’s upcoming English-language film Digger, scheduled for release on October 2, 2026. Described as “a comedy of catastrophic proportions,” the film features Cruise in the role of the world’s most powerful man.

Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment recently unveiled the first poster and teaser of the film. Cruise shared the announcement on Instagram, writing: “Introducing — DIGGER. A comedy of catastrophic proportions from director Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Only in theaters October 2026.”

Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, a character described by Warner Bros. as “the most powerful man in the world” who embarks on a frantic mission to prove himself as humanity’s saviour before a disaster he has unleashed destroys everything, according to a logline released by the studio.

The ensemble cast includes Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, Riz Ahmed and Emma D’Arcy.

Digger marks Cruise’s first project since signing a deal with Warner Bros. Discovery in January to develop and produce theatrical films. His previous collaboration with the studio was Edge of Tomorrow, released a decade ago.

The film also marks Iñárritu’s return to English-language cinema after The Revenant. Shot in the United Kingdom over six months, Digger is produced and directed by Iñárritu, who co-wrote the screenplay with Birdman collaborators Nicolás Giacobone and Alexander Dinelaris, along with Sabina Berman.

Produced by Cruise and Iñárritu, Digger is expected to premiere at a major international film festival. Iñárritu’s previous works have featured prominently at Venice and Cannes, including Birdman, 21 Grams, Babel and Amores Perros, reports Variety.
