US President Donald Trump has said that Russian President Vladimir Putin “would like to end the war” in Ukraine, referring to a recent meeting in Moscow between Putin and two of Trump’s close associates, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff. Trump described their interaction as a “very good meeting,” suggesting that it offered a glimpse into Putin’s interest in negotiating peace.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Wednesday (local time), Trump said he had been briefed by Kushner and Witkoff after their discussions with the Russian leader. “Their impression was that he wants the war to come to an end,” Trump said. He added that Putin likely wants to “return to a more normal life” and resume economic cooperation, including trade with the United States.
Trump reiterated his long-standing claim that the conflict would not have erupted if he had been in office at the time, as diplomatic tensions surrounding the war continue to shape global political discourse.
