Hyderabad’s once-praised civic and infrastructure initiatives under the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) have lost momentum over the past two years, with several major programmes reportedly stalled and attention shifting towards demolitions and controversial projects under the Congress government.
There was a time when corporate executives, retired officials and eminent personalities widely lauded Hyderabad’s rapid infrastructure growth, particularly the focus on easing traffic congestion. The city was often showcased as a model for road development, flyovers, link roads, seamless airport connectivity and subways.
Flagship initiatives such as the Strategic Road Development Programme (SRDP), Strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP), Comprehensive Road Maintenance Programme (CRMP), along with link road projects executed through the Hyderabad Road Development Corporation Limited (HRDCL), had significantly transformed the city’s urban landscape. However, over the past two years, many of these initiatives have slowed down, raising concerns among citizens and urban planners about the future of Hyderabad’s infrastructure development.
