UPI payments to cost less than cash at NH tolls from Nov 15

Starting November 15, 2025, the Indian government is introducing a revised toll payment policy on National Highways to promote digital transactions and reduce cash handling. Under the new rules, vehicles without a valid FASTag will incur a penalty of 1.25 times the standard toll fee when paying through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), compared to the current penalty of double the toll fee for cash payments. For instance, if the regular toll fee is ₹100, non-FASTag users will pay ₹125 via UPI and ₹200 in cash

This initiative aims to encourage the adoption of digital payment methods, streamline toll collection processes, and alleviate congestion at toll plazas. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) emphasizes that this shift will enhance transparency and efficiency in toll operations, aligning with the government's broader push towards a cashless economy. Motorists are encouraged to ensure their vehicles are equipped with functional FASTags or to utilize UPI for toll payments to benefit from the reduced penalties.
