ZSI Scientists Discover New Soil-Dwelling Micro-Arthropod Species in Sikkim

Scientists from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have discovered a new soil-dwelling micro-arthropod species, Neelus sikkimensis, in the high-altitude regions of Sikkim. This marks the first Indian record of the genus Neelus, highlighting the Eastern Himalayas as a critical biodiversity hotspot.

The discovery, led by Gurupada Mandal and Kusumendra Kumar Suman, was published in the Journal of the Entomological Research Society. Neelus sikkimensis, a tiny springtail, is specially adapted to life deep within soil and moss and plays a key role in maintaining terrestrial ecosystem health.
