20 Dead in Jakarta Building Fire, Say Police"

At least 20 people, including a pregnant woman, were killed in a fire that broke out on Tuesday (December 9, 2025) in a seven-storey office building in central Jakarta, Indonesian police said.

According to Central Jakarta Police Chief Susatyo Purnomo Condro, the blaze began when a battery on the first floor exploded, causing flames to rapidly spread to the upper floors.

“So far, 20 victims have been retrieved — five men and 15 women,” he said, adding that preliminary assessments suggest most victims died of asphyxiation rather than burn injuries.

The bodies have been sent to the police hospital for autopsy.

Firefighters continued search operations late into the evening, looking for any additional people who may still be trapped inside the building.
