MIT Professor Fatally Shot at Home; Homicide Investigation Underway
Brookline, Massachusetts: Nuno FG Loureiro, a 47-year-old professor of physics, nuclear science, and engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), was fatally shot at his home near Boston, prompting a homicide investigation. Authorities have made no arrests so far.
The Norfolk District Attorney’s Office confirmed that Loureiro was shot Monday night at his Brookline residence and later died at a local hospital on Tuesday. The investigation remains ongoing, with no suspects in custody.
Loureiro, originally from Portugal, joined MIT in 2016 and was named last year as head of MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center, one of the institute’s largest labs, housing over 250 researchers across seven buildings. In this role, he led efforts to advance fusion energy and clean energy technology, earning recognition as a visionary in his field.
“He shone a bright light as a mentor, friend, teacher, colleague, and leader, and was universally admired for his articulate, compassionate manner,” said Dennis Whyte, a former head of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center.
Students and colleagues paid their respects at Loureiro’s apartment on Tuesday, reflecting on his leadership and commitment to science. The US ambassador to Portugal, John J. Arrigo, also expressed condolences online, highlighting Loureiro’s contributions to global scientific research.
The tragedy comes amid heightened concern over gun violence in the region, following a recent shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Neighbors reported hearing loud noises near Loureiro’s residence Monday night, believed to be gunshots.
Loureiro had previously stated, “Fusion energy will change the course of human history,” underscoring his dedication to addressing humanity’s most pressing challenges through science.
