At the India AI Impact Summit 2026, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described India as one of the fastest-growing Artificial Intelligence markets in the world, highlighting that the country now has over 100 million weekly users of ChatGPT. He called India’s AI potential “amazing” and emphasised the country’s strong talent base, rapid adoption, and supportive ecosystem.
Altman also announced the launch of the OpenAI for India initiative, aimed at building AI infrastructure, strengthening workforce skills, and developing local partnerships to create solutions tailored for India. As part of this effort, OpenAI will collaborate with the Tata Group to expand AI access and drive innovation.
The partnership will focus on developing AI-ready data centre capacity, enterprise adoption, and workforce upskilling, positioning India as a key player in the future of global AI development.
