Karnataka has introduced the Social Boycott (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Bill, 2025, a landmark legislation that criminalises caste-based and community-imposed social boycotts, especially those enforced by caste panchayats. The bill lists 20 forms of boycott—ranging from denial of services and business opportunities to blocking participation in social or religious events—and makes such acts punishable with up to three years imprisonment or a fine of ₹1 lakh.
The proposed law declares gatherings aimed at deciding or imposing a social boycott as “unlawful” and mandates punishment for anyone abetting such actions. All offences under the act will be cognizable and bailable. The government will also appoint a Social Boycott Prohibition Officer to investigate and enforce the law.
The government additionally tabled amendments to the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024, expanding representation in the Greater Bengaluru Authority and enabling redivision of wards for newly added areas.
