New Delhi: The Winter Session of Parliament opened with sharp exchanges between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi as both sides clashed over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
PM Modi urged MPs to ensure a “drama-free and productive” session, stressing that Parliament should focus on constructive debate and delivery. His remarks were viewed as a veiled attack on the Opposition’s frequent disruptions.
Rahul Gandhi, while refraining from responding directly to the Prime Minister’s comments, led the Opposition in demanding an immediate and detailed discussion on SIR, alleging irregularities and calling it a matter of democratic integrity.
The disagreement triggered heavy protests in both Houses, with Opposition members storming the Well and raising slogans. As chaos continued, the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned multiple times, effectively halting proceedings on Day 1.
The confrontation between Modi and Rahul Gandhi has set the tone for a stormy Winter Session, with the SIR debate expected to dominate the coming days.
