Visakhapatnam Airport shutdown leaves workers worried over jobs, salaries

Visakhapatnam: Flight operations at Visakhapatnam Airport were suspended from midnight on Sunday as services shifted to the new Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport from Monday. The transition has left several airport workers worried about their jobs and salaries, while passengers recalled their long association with the old airport. Housekeeping worker Ganditi Ramu, who has worked at the airport for 15 years, said employees were uncertain about their future following the shutdown. “We have approached the authorities and our company management, but there has been no response,” Ramu said, appealing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior officials to intervene. Another housekeeping worker, Sunita, said employees were facing difficulties in managing their families following the closure. The workers have urged the authorities and their employers to clarify their employment status and ensure that their salaries and livelihoods are protected during the transition.
