As the rupee has weakened sharply against the US dollar over the past decade, Dr B.R. Ambedkar’s century-old work The Problem of the Rupee offers timely insights. Ambedkar viewed currency stability not as a market technicality but as a product of strong institutions, credible policy, and a resilient real economy. He warned against overdependence on external anchors and stressed that unstable money ultimately burdens ordinary citizens through inflation and uncertainty. His ideas underline that a stable rupee cannot be achieved through quick fixes, but only through disciplined governance, transparent monetary policy, and long-term structural reforms that strengthen productivity, exports, and economic confidence.
