Charminar Lacks Basic Seating Despite Grand Redevelopment Promises

Visitors at Charminar in Hyderabad continue to face inconvenience due to lack of basic facilities like seating, despite long-standing redevelopment plans. Locals question delays in the ambitious project aimed at transforming the area on par with the Taj Mahal zone. Extended Content: Despite ambitious plans to revamp the surroundings of Charminar, ground realities tell a different story. Tourists visiting the iconic landmark in Hyderabad are struggling due to the absence of even basic amenities such as seating arrangements. The long-pending Charminar Pedestrianisation Project, later renamed as the Charminar Historical Precinct Revitalisation Project, aimed to beautify the area, improve infrastructure, and enhance the tourist experience. However, visitors still find themselves sitting on the ground or walking long distances to nearby places like Mecca Masjid or Chowmahalla Palace just to find a place to rest. Tourism Minister Jupally Krishna Rao recently reiterated the government’s vision to develop the Charminar area similar to the Taj Mahal precinct. However, locals and stakeholders express frustration, pointing out that despite years of planning and significant public expenditure, only limited progress—mainly flooring works—has been achieved. Shopkeepers and residents say promises have been made repeatedly without visible improvements in visitor facilities. Public representatives, including Mir Zulfeqar Ali, have urged authorities to expedite the project and complete long-delayed works. The situation highlights the gap between planning and execution, raising concerns over urban heritage management and tourist infrastructure in one of Hyderabad’s most visited landmarks.
