Telangana Gram Panchayat Polls Conclude with BRS Posting Major Gains
The three-phase Gram Panchayat elections in Telangana concluded on Wednesday, with BRS-backed candidates making significant gains across the State, boosting the party’s morale ahead of the upcoming ZPTC and MPTC polls. Meanwhile, the Congress faced notable setbacks in rural areas.
Despite allegations of threats by Congress MLAs and misuse of money and muscle power, voters largely supported BRS-backed candidates, who emerged victorious as Sarpanches and Ward Members across Telangana.
Of the 12,728 Gram Panchayats in the State, 1,205 Sarpanches were elected unanimously, while elections were held for 11,497 panchayats in three phases. According to political party claims, Congress won 6,874 panchayats, BRS secured 3,994, and BJP won 666.
Although Gram Panchayat elections are contested by individuals without formal party affiliations, family members and relatives of several Congress MPs and MLAs suffered losses, marking a significant rural setback for the ruling party.
The results have energized the BRS cadre as it gears up for the forthcoming ZPTC and MPTC elections. Reports suggest that several Congress leaders, including Wanaparthy MLA T Megha Reddy, Jadcherla MLA J Anirudh Reddy, and Alair MLA Beerla Ilaiah, allegedly attempted to influence voters by threatening delays in development funds if BRS-supported candidates were elected.
Despite such warnings, villagers in districts including Nagarkurnool and Mancherial reportedly resisted attempts by Congress leaders to distribute money, questioning the party over unfulfilled promises from the Assembly elections.
The Gram Panchayat election results highlight the growing support for BRS in rural Telangana, signaling a potential shift in the State’s political dynamics ahead of larger local body elections.
